Հասանք Տուն - We Came Home

 «Ով քնած է՝ արթուն կացէք,Ով արթուն է՝ ձիեր թամբէք, Ով թամբեր է՝ զէնքեր կապէք, Ով կապեր է՝ ելէք, հեծէք,Չասէք Դաւիթ գող-գող եկաւ՛, գող-գող գնաց:»


We arrived in Yerevan last night, after a long but comfortable journey. As we drove to our hotel, the students were glued to the minibus windows taking in Yerevan's lights. They were impatiently waiting to see the city in daylight, so impatient most could not sleep at all.

 Today was dedicated to memory and remembrance and also had the opportunity to get a tour of the city. We visited Pantheon ( The cemetery housing the graves of famous Armenian literary figures), the museum dedicated to Zoravar Antranig and Dzidzernagapert (the Armenian Genocide Memorial).

We started the day by visiting one of Yerevan's most beautiful statues, that of Sasountzi Tavit. The students remembered the different portions of the epic as we stood by and viewed the most successful depiction of the epic's protagonist.  The students learned that the epic of Sasountzi Tavit is the embodiment of the Armenian character and identity. They were then introduced to the meanings of the symbols present in the statue. The horse, Kourgig Chalali, for example, has no reins since it knew well who was a friend and who was a foe and led Tavit to where he needed to go. Tavit is wearing the traditional Sasountzi garment as shown vividly on his pants.  His sword is held as one would hold a scythe when reaping crops showing how the Armenian character is one that is peaceful and hardworking but prepared to defend itself if need be.  At the heels of the horse is the cup of patience from which water trickles.






 We then went to Dzidzernagapert where we immortalized the memory of those who were victims to the Armenian Genocide. Prayers, tears and flowers were what we brought, we left with an even stronger will to continue the struggle to bring justice and give voice to our ancestors.

The museum and a part of the monument were under repair in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. As a result, we were unable to visit the museum. Our visit also preceded that of the Georgian president's who laid a wreath shortly after we left.

We then went to the Pantheon. The students were glad they had the opportunity to visit and pay respect to the memory of the authours and artists they have learned about throughout their education at our school. Digin Hasmig shared her knowledge on the lives of these important figures and recited verses of poetry. The students and I were fortunate to be at this site with Digin Hasmig who has been one of the teachers who introduced us to these literary giants from a very young age.

 The students then had the opportunity to visit the museum housing the history and artifacts associated with Zoravar Antranig just two days after his birthday. Here the students learned about Zoravar Antranig's contribution to the Armenian resistance and defense movements against the Ottoman Empire's oppressive and genocidal policies. The museum houses his personal belongings, letters and various other historical items.

During the city tour, the students visited the statue of Mother Armenia and spent some time examining the military vehicles in Victory Park dedicated to the Victory of the allies during the Second World War.
